18 - Education, Institutional Developments, and A President's Death

Ben Finch

It was quite interesting to learn about the deep tie Brigham Young has to higher education, and particularly, women's higher education in Brigham Young's Romance with American Higher Education. How they reconcile the differences between scientific pursuit and faith seem to be somewhat similar to today, though they seem much more willing to defend "orthodox" belief than perhaps modern people. I found this quote to be interesting from Susa Young Gates Letters: "tell her I shall forever remember her shy farewell kiss. My lips are pressed to others too seldom to not be carefully remembered." Just a very tender & personal moment.
