I found the 2007 Ensign article to be very helpful in giving a detailed overview of the massacre. I had not considered before that the saints were once again afraid of the US government (I hadn't really heard of the Utah war before this). I, too, thought of how tragic it was that Brigham Young's response letter was too late. I think this underscores how important it is for us to treat human life delicately and not hastily get caught up in a murderous mob.
