Extended Technique
Anything an instrumentalist does to create sound outside of the normal sounds of their instrument. Examples:
Multiphonics
- When an instruement intended to create only one pitch at a time creates multiple pitches
Instruments as percussion
- A non-percussion insturment being used as percussion
Prepared instruments
- Inserting objects into an instrument to make it sound different
Prepared piano
- Developed by John Cage
- Specific instructions on what items to insert and where
- Imitates bells, gongs, etc
Flutter tongue
- This technique consists of fluttering the tongue, like rolling an "r" sound, while blowing on a wind instrument.
Pitch bend and smear
A pitch bend is when an instrumentalist plays a pitch and then, through various techniques, is able ot "bend" the pitch downward. A smear is when a performer moves from one pitch ot another in one continuous smear - the normal step-wise progression is not heard.
