|(2x+3)−11|<ε|2x−8|<ε2|x−4|<ε|x−4|<ε2δ=ε2

Proof. Let ε>0. Fix δ=ε2. Let x∈R. Assume that 0<|x−4|<δ. Then 0<|x−4|<ε2. Thus 2|x−4|<ε. Hence |2x−8|<ε. Thus |(2x+3)−11|<ε. ◻

Avoid −14 so that you're not where the function is undefined.

Require |x−2|<1 x∈(1,3). 5<|4x+1|<13.
|x−2|5<ε. |x−2|<5ε. δ=min(1,5ε)

Proof.
Let ε>0. Fix δ=min(1,5ε). Let x∈R−{−14}. Assume 0<|x−2|<δ. Then |x−2|<min(1,5ε). Thus |x−2|<1 and |x−2|<5ε. Then x∈(1,3). Then 5<|4x+1|<13. Thus |x−2||4x+1|<|x−2|5. Then |x−2||4x+1|<5ε5 since |x−2|<5ε.

Thus

E 35.1
Prove that limx→42x+3=11

Scratch work

|(2x+3)−11|<ε|2x−8|<ε2|x−4|<ε|x−4|<ε2δ=ε2

Proof. Let ε>0. Fix δ=ε2. Let x∈R. Assume that 0<|x−4|<δ. Then 0<|x−4|<ε2. Thus 2|x−4|<ε. Hence |2x−8|<ε. Thus |(2x+3)−11|<ε. ◻

E 35.2
Proof.
We want to show that limx→acx+d=ca+d.

Given an ε>0, we need to find δ>0 such that if 0<|x−a|<δ, then:

|cx+d−(ca+d)|<ε

Simplifying the expression:

|cx+d−ca−d|=|c(x−a)|

Case 1: c=0

For c=0, the expression |c(x−a)| becomes 0, and the condition |0⋅(x−a)|<ε is trivially true for any x since |0⋅(x−a)|=0. Thus, we can choose any δ>0, and the condition will be satisfied.

Case 2: c≠0

We need to find a δ such that |c||x−a|<ε.

We can choose δ as follows:

δ=ε|c|

Now, whenever 0<|x−a|<δ, we have:

|c||x−a|<|c|δ=|c|⋅ε|c|=ε

Therefore, for every ε>0, we have found a δ>0 that satisfies the definition of the limit. ◻

E 35.3
Prove that limx→5x2+3x+3=43

Scratch work:

|x2+3x−40|<ε|(x+8)(x−5)|<ε

Require |x−5|<1, so x∈(4,6). Then x+8∈(12,14) and hence 12<x+8<14. So |(x−5)(x+8)|<|x−5|⋅14<ε. Then |x−5|<ε14. So choose δ=min(1,ε14).

Proof.
Let ε>0. Choose δ=min(1,ε14). Let x be any real number such that 0<|x−5|<δ.

  1. If 0<|x−5|<1, then x is in the interval (4,6). Therefore, 12<x+8<14.

  2. Now, |(x+8)(x−5)|=|x−5|⋅|x+8|<|x−5|⋅14<ε14⋅14=ε.

Hence, limx→5x2+3x+3=43.

|7x+44x+1−2|<ε|7x+4−2(4x+1)4x+1|<ε|−x+24x+1|<ε|x−24x+1|<ε

Require |x−2|<1 x∈(1,3). 5<|4x+1|<13.
|x−2|5<ε. |x−2|<5ε. δ=min(1,5ε)

Proof.
Let ε>0. Fix δ=min(1,5ε). Let x∈R−{−14}. Assume 0<|x−2|<δ. Then |x−2|<min(1,5ε). Thus |x−2|<1 and |x−2|<5ε. Then x∈(1,3). Then 5<|4x+1|<13. Thus |x−2||4x+1|<|x−2|5. Then |x−2||4x+1|<5ε5 since |x−2|<5ε. ◻

E 35.5
Prove that limx→3x3+x2+2=38.

Scratch Work

|x3+x2+2−38|<ε|x3+x2−36|<ε

Note that x3+x2−36 can be rewritten as x2(x+1)−36. Now, consider x∈(2,4), to ensure that x+1 and x2 do not vary too wildly.

So we have:

|x3+x2−36|=|x2(x+1)−36|≤|x2||x+1|+36|x2(x+1)−36|<16×5+36=116

Now, we need to find a δ such that when 0<|x−3|<δ, it follows that |x3+x2−36|<ε. Since |x3+x2−36|<116 in our chosen interval, we can make 116<ε by choosing δ small enough.

Thus, we can set δ=min(1,ε116).

Proof.
Let ε>0. Fix δ=min(1,ε116). Let x∈R. Assume 0<|x−3|<δ. Then |x−3|<min(1,ε116). Thus x∈(2,4) and |x3+x2−36|<116<ε. Hence, limx→3x3+x2+2=38. ◻
